Why Should Books Be Banned?
Many parents argue that censorship is beneficial in protecting their young children from uncovering inappropriate information that they are not mature enough for. Television shows, movies and even video games have age restrictions, but why don't books? Kids easily have the opportunity to pick up mature books, without even knowing it. Even though this reason is logical, my understanding is that everyone should have to opportunity to choose what they would like to acquire, being that in most circumstances, information is censored to benefit a group of people looking to hide the facts. In China, the government claims that they censor information to "protect" their people, but it is actually used to protect themselves from releasing dominance. Pictures or any written text that critize the government are deleted immediently by people monitoring the Internet. Yu Hua stated in her article intitled The Censorship Pendulum, "Someone once asked me: 'When will China ever have real freedom of speech?' I responded optimistically: 'When 'Sorry, the text has been deleted' disappears from the world of Weibo."
