My Stance
Laurie Halse once illustrated, "Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance." This quote manifests the impact of censorship on a society, being a source of fear of the unknown but also the keeping of a stable nation. Overall, I believe that censorship is not just, because everyone deserves the right to intake knowledge and express their ideas through writing. I do not believe Animal Farm should be challenged because of its communism ideas expressed, instead people of all ages should be encouraged to delve into the novel. Animal Farm tells a classic, comical tale of animals' life on a farm, has history woven into the story, and provides essential life lessons for everyday use. I'm glad I had the opportunity to read this fantastic novel, and express my perspective of its impact to whoever may be interested.
Even though I have thoroughly explained why Animal Farm should be banned, you may still be asking yourself: "So what? Why should this matter to me?" Well, Animal Farm is just one of those great examples of possessions we have the right to hold onto but have not been able to in the past, and currently in the world around us. Censorship surrounds us in ever aspect of life, whether you realize it or not. Just in my school, rules prohibit students from wearing particular clothing and possessing certain items on school property. Banning of items, actions and ideas are apart of everyday life. Only frequently, is it truly used to protecting a stable society. It is important that we are exposed to the knowledge in order to fight for our rights and what is meaningful to us. Just like individuals today fight for the right to own weapons, marry who they choose, speak out for what they believe in, and practice the religion of their choice, I'm asking you help prevent fantastic novels like Animal Farm from being challenged. Banning Animal Farm takes away the rights of individuals to discover new knowledge and also stripes George Orwell's right to speak out his perspective through story telling. Even throughout the story, the pigs are exposed to the injustice of censorhship by blocking information from the other animals. It is important to me to allow all present and future citizens to have the right to discover more about themselves through literature, and I hope it has become important to you too.
